The Lent Season this year is from Ash Wednesday, March 2, and ends on Black Saturday, April 16 – a forty-day observance (excluding Sundays) of fasting and abstinence.
NOTE ON THE IMAGE ON TOP: The image symbolizing Lent in this post is work done by 4-year old Brooklyn C. Alvarez — granddaughter of Front Page Philippines’ Gie & Ace Alvarez. Brooklyn did the project in one art class she attended a couple of months back and presented the item as a Christmas gift to her grandparents.

Join Program Host Gie Alvarez as she takes us to a review of songs that kept coins dropping on jukeboxes in the Philippines during the 70s, 80s and 90s.
The Philippines saw an emergence of OPM (Original Pilipino Music) in the 70s from the likes of Haji Alejandro – the 1st Winner of the Metro Manila Music Festival, interpreting National Artist for Music Ryan Cayabyab‘s “Kay Ganda ng Ating Musika”; the Total Entertainer Rico J. Puno‘s “May Bukas Pa” from an Ernie dela Peña composition.
Former Torontonian Leah Navarro is also in this episode with her rendition of George Canseco‘s “Kailangan Kita”.
Gie takes us after to the jukebox hits of the 80s: Imelda Papin‘s “Kung Liligaya Ka sa Piling ng Iba”, Eva Eugenio‘s “Tukso”, Didith Reyes‘ “Bakit Ako Mahihiya” and Claire de la Fuente‘s “Sayang”–in a medley rendered to viewers by Asia’s Queen of Songs herself, Ms. Pilita Corrales.
The 90s saw Lani Misalucha, Regine Velasquez and a lot — hit songs interpreted for us by “The Voice”- Jed Madela.
Join Program Host Gie Alvarez as she rocks your Saturday in a segment of this episode with original Pinoy rock music from Toronto’s Jenifer Camacho and the power trio of iconic Juan de la Cruz Band of the Philippines — namely, Pepe Smith, Wally Gonzalez & Mike Hanopol.
Also in this episode is a cultural feature on the Hispanization of the Philippines having been under Spain’s colonial regime for over 300 years and reflected in the country’s and its people’s religious, political and economic lives, including food, language, songs and dances.
In “Getting to Know the Philippines”, Front Page Philippines takes us for a visit to Vigan in Ilocus Sur — a unique town (now a city) among the Philippine towns because it is the country’s most extensive and only surviving historic city, dating back to the 16th century Spanish colonial period.
